Krampus originates from pre-Christian Alpine folklore, where horned winter spirits were believed to roam during the coldest months of the year. By the Middle Ages, the figure of Krampus became intertwined with St. Nicholas traditions in Austria and Bavaria, serving as a cautionary counterpart who punished misbehavior while St. Nicholas rewarded virtue. Krampusnacht, observed on the evening of December 5th, marked the night when communities gathered for processions, masks, bells, and performances meant to ward off evil spirits and welcome the winter season.
